The GREAT AgVenture

We will be teaching the Life of Worms and Why We Need Them at the Great AgVenture. This is an annual event held at the Paso Robles Event Center for 4th graders county wide. Over 1200 kids and their teachers (and some parents too!) rotate through several short class/demonstrations all ag related. The kids get to see tractors, learn how cotton is spun, how goats are milked, how to plant trees, why earthworms are important and more! We’re happy to participate in this event…this is our 5th year.

Planting cool weather vegetables

Join us at the San Miguel Merchantile. We’ll be talking about and planting cool weather vegetables using minerals, microbes and mycorrhizae. This method is appropriate for:

  • Raised beds

  • Outdoor containers

  • Indoor window containers

  • In-ground planting

We will plant an indoor window container right on the spot!

This workshop is free, but if you would like to plant your own herb and lettuce container, supplies and plants will be available. The cost of the container, potting soil, all amendments and plants is $25.

Starting with the basic understanding of what I call "the 3 Ms", you will be ready to prepare your garden soil for a wildly successful Spring/Summer garden.

Minerals, Microbes and Mycellium - essential key components to building soil that will support your plants so they can achieve their highest potential - producing highly nutritious food that tastes so good even those finnicky eaters will smile and want more!

This class is free. Bring your friends! Continuous tours of the worm farm will take place before the class between 2 and 3:30.

An email letting me know you will attend is helpful, but not necessary. We just want to have enough chairs and handouts for everyone.

The worm farm will be open to the public Saturday, Sept 23 from 1 pm to 3 pm for tours and worm harvesting.

Want to start a worm bin and have worms eat your garbage? Today is the day! U pick your own worms! Bring your worm bin ready to add worms! For just $10. you can pick up to 1000 worms. That's about one pound of red wigglers ready to consume your kitchen waste. Learn how to set up your worm bin at www.redwormcomposting.com/getting-started/. It's the best site with lots of photos and videos to help you out and answer questions.

REGISTER TO PICK WORMS - REQUIRED. SPACE IS LIMITED TO 2 WORM BINS AT 1 PM AND 2 WORM BINS AT 2 PM. One worm bin can have 2 people picking worms only. Having a ready to stock worm bin is also required.

You can purchase Black Diamond VermiCompost this afternoon too. We will have a limited supply of Orchard Blend available...my favorite for trees and perennials as it contains plenty of fungal food for this type of soil.

You've got to get soil biology and mineralization right if you want nutritious, abundant crops. It doesn't have to be difficult and complicated. Easy to understand basic knowledge will get you started! Join us and learn how!

Experienced and knowledgeable local farmer, Dean Harrell combines biology and mineral nutrition to promote healthy plants and people. This program will help you set up your garden for the coming months and beyond, in a way that will be practical, enlightening and informative.

Demonstration garden plots include in-ground and raised beds. You will observe the filling of the raised bed including amendments. We will also prepare and plant a portion of the in-ground bed.

Passing on the winter veggies? Cover cropping is a good option for the winter. We'll discuss which cover crop seeds work for different soil types, how to plant them and what to do when they have grown and need to be harvested or incorporated.

The demonstration will conclude with a tour of the worm farm, how we produce Black Diamond VermiCompost and what makes it a unique product.
