A challenging project we were excited to take on!
This was a highly challenging project. The area had previously been prepared for a house foundation. On our initial visit, we found complete foundation framing, including re-bar, etc. They were ready to pour concrete. The entire area, approx. 10,000 sf, had been scraped and compacted for foundation installation, which never happened. The new owner abandoned the home construction and wanted a lawn installed around the tennis court instead.
If turf would thrive, we would need to take some drastic action. Here was our plan:
Drill into the compacted ground every 18”. We accomplished this by injecting compost tea (brewer in the foreground) 16” deep. A deep root treatment tool was used for this process. This opened up the dirt, added organic matter, water and soil microbes and created airspaces for root growth.
After applying several tons of compost blended with Black Diamond Vermicompost and hundreds of gallons of vermicompost tea with a spray rig, grass seed was added. Followed by more compost tea sprays. This photo was taken 3 days after germination started.
Three weeks later we were pleased with the uniformity of the germination and the depth of the green. The month was November.
The following spring we returned to prepare wells for the trees and measure the depth of the root growth.
Results: 6” root growth, loose airy soil, water holding capacity was above average and the grass had grown evenly and lush.
